Speaking, part 1

Possible topics for Speaking part 1

Task type: A short conversation between the interlocutor and each candidate Length: 3 minutes (For both candidates to intervene) What you do: Ask and answer personal questions What it tests: Your ability to use general interactional language

How to do it

  • Listen carefully to the questions and try to repeat at least one of the key words in your reply.
  • Speak clearly and look at the person you are talking to.

Speaking - Part 2

Task type: Individual long turns and brief responses

Length: 1 minute long turns for each candidate and 20-second response from the second candidate

What you do: Talk about / compare visual prompts

What it tests: Your ability to describe, compare and express opinions. See also this video, which is very helpful to cope with describing pictures in Part 2

How to do it:

  • Describe each scene in general. Mention any obvious similarities or differences.
  • Say how they make you feel, or what they remind you of.
  • Describe what the people are doing or wearing.
  • Say how the people might be feeling and how you might feel in a similar situation.

Speaking - Part 3

Task type: Two-way interaction between candidates Length: 3 minutes What do you do: Discuss and do a decission-making task based on written prompts What it tests: Your abitity to exchange ideas, express and justify opinions, agree and disagree, speculate, evaluate and reach a decision through negotiation, etc.

How to do it

  • Give your own opinions clearly and simply.
  • Listen to your partner and react to what he says.
  • Try to correct any mistake you make, but don't spend time worrying about them.
  • Keep talking untill your examiner stops you.

Useful language:

  • Well, why don't we...?
  • How does this sound?
  • Shall we...?
  • How about...?
  • I know. What about...?
  • I've got an idea. We could...
  • Do you fancy (+ing)....?
  • Would you like to....?

Speaking - Part 4

Task type: A discussion between candidates and the interlocutor.

Length: 4 minutes

What do you do: Discuss issues related to the part 3 topic.

What it tests: Your capacity to express and justify opinions, agree and/or disagree.

How is the speaking exam going to be assessed?

There are two examiners in the Speaking exam. One is the interlocutor, who speaks to you and manages the test. The interlocutor will award you a mark for global achievement (a general mark for how well you did in the whole test). The other is the assessor, who only listens. The assessor uses four assessment criteria: Grammar and Vocabulary, Discourse, Management, Pronunciation and Interactive Communication. For more details, see these [comments].

  • The correct use of prepositional phrases can often be indicators of above average range in Speaking tests.
